I have VHE 3.4 and am using it on Windows Vista. The problem I am having with textures is the ability to select a single face. I don't know if it's the .fgd file that's the root of my problem, or if it's the fact that it's running under Vista. Maybe it's something else.

The maps I am working on are for Day of Defeat (non source). When I select a texture for a brush it's applied to all six sides. I cannot select a single face to change for example, the interior of a wall/room.

When I downloaded and installed VHE, it had "halflife-DOD2-expert.fgd" alread in the fgd directory. I changed it to "dod.fgd" which I found on filefront (but I don't know if that was an older one or the most current. Later I found a link for and downloaded "dod_v131_haircut.fgd" and again a little later I found another "dod.fgd". None of these have helped me.

One of the problems I had as well is the fact that my version of Vista is X86. I installed it under the "Program Files" directory and everytime I run it, Vista asks me if it's okay to run the program. I authorize it, but I don't know if Vista is maybe restricting it somehow. I was unable to install it into the Program Files (X86) directory because the installation program would not permit the use of "(" or ")".

Can someone help me out with this?

I use hammer 3.5 but I believe that the difference between 3.4 and 3.5 is only to do with model views.

I don't have a problem in vista with applying a texture to one face ? are you using your right mous button to apply the texture ? Also are you getting confused with the Align: world and Face tick boxes ?

I hope this helps.

ps I use haircuts fgd file

I'm not using the right mouse button (though I did just now try it because you sort of implied above that I should - still didn't work). As far as the tick boxes are concerned, when I select the tool, the "World" and "Face" both have a check mark in them. The "World" is black, and the "Face" is grey. I select "Face" to make that check mark become black and "World" then becomes grey. It still doesn't work.

This is how I would try to change the texture on one face.

click on the object to select it (a wall for example) it should cahnge to red.
click on texture tool
both world and face are ticked but face is greyed (ignore these)
click browse and select new texture (do not click apply)
right mouse click on the part of the wall that you want to change.

for info my mode setting is lift+select

Thats it.
I hope that this works for you too m8

I've tried as you indicated, but it still doesn't work for me. Here is precisely how I'm doing it:

In the Top view window (easier to pick out a single brush), I select the wall which I wish to change the face on (the whole brush is selected).

I click on the "Toggle Texture Application (Shift + A)" button.

The "Face Properties" dialogue window opens up.

Previously, I was using the "Replace" button, but per you instructions, I used the browse.

The texture window now opens, I browse to another texture, and double click on it.

I move my cursor to the 3D window (the cursor has an arrow with a paint bucket attached to it), right-click on the inside face of the brush/wall, and still nothing happens.

If, after right-clicking on the face (without any change to it), and I close the face properties dialogue window, still nothing changes.

If I repeat the process, and after right-clicking on the face I wish to change, and select "Apply", then all 6 sides of the brush/wall change.

I'm guessing at this point, having tried different variations, that I probably will have to uninstall and re-install VHE to see if something has become corrupt and the re-install may fix whatever is ailing it.

I'm at a total loss on this. I uninstalled, then re-installed and it still doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Does anybody else have any ideas/suggestions that might explain/fix this problem?

Well, I think I found my problem, but I don't know if there's a fix for it. For those who have followed a bit of this thread, the problem lies with the ATI video card and/or it's drivers.

I downloaded this evening new drivers for the card, but I don't know if they'll resolve my issue or not.
