View Full Version : New Mod in Development
Ok, I have registered the new domain, and am starting the setup on the website...this will be very limited, and a co-op type setup. What I need to do is to learn more about the Source Engine and how to program mods for it. What I hope to create is a DoD that is using the source engine, more realistic for WW2 to include Japan, of which will be the first place I want to start, Japs vs Yanks, instead of Jerries vs Yanks/Brits. Once we have the basics in place and working demos on the go we can then work on the other side of the Battlefield. So some of the things I want to see is to have multiple keys, such as an alternate fire plus a alternate weapon extention, such as you can choose to use bayo, or rifle grenades. You can use fists, knives, pistols, whatever. Obviously this is a grandious thing that I cannot do alone, and could potentially replace DoD...who knows...for now to get a map 2 classes, good guy bad guy with 1 weapon is all Im aiming for at the outset. Nothing special, just something to get people involved into it. So those of you with skills who wish to join up I will be taking names shortly once I have things running...Ill be doing alot of the programming, but I will need help...so please stand by and I will let you know when things are ready to ramp up....
Cheers!
Just to let everyone know. I have started the Mod Page...for those of you interested in this...please come on over and join the club. I hope to see many of you there...and hopefully some of you are willing to join me!
Cheers!
PS
I will not be neglecting DoD Plugins...just going to have more than one thing on my plate!

I hope you can handle that better then me... I have so many open projects looking to be finished... I have a bad habit of jumping feet first into anything new I discover only the leave behind what I was working on...

I don't wish to start a new thread or an argument on this at all. Its your Mod.
So you probably considered some other open source free engines that are similar to the H/life engine rather than using Steam?
So thats the question the pros an cons.
If you have some other free engines links I could do some research on it. HL2 would give it the best distribution thats the biggest thing about it.

I have been thinking of trying the newest version of 3 myself, but I spent so much time on my current forum I am afraid of losing all that work...
What is some of the "new" shit, that might be worth mentioning ?

Check this http://www.devmaster.net/engines/
Yeah Steam is great (sort of) it keeps every one at the same patch level.
Some of these engine are hammer compatible and take H/life models etc (I would like to see bump mapping, detail textures and better skymap)
http://www.ca3d-engine.de
But there are heaps.
Thanks for these pointers...I will have to look at them...obviously steam is not neccessary in the long run as all that happens is that the games get packaged to be distributed by steam, so once we get a game up and running we can the do either steam dist, or ea dist...dont matter...whichever it be it may end up making us some money...however that is NOT my main goal...I eventually wish to work in the gaming industry and this is the best way do go about it...developing your own games...
Cheers!

Maybe you could look at this abandoned project, also a book is published on the engine, that might help contributors. (Its the Green Light project)

Heh, I was actually taking over that project so to speak. My unit was developing a game and we got Project Greenlight to give us some of their materials since they had abandoned it. But we too abandoned it due to time constraints.
I too have not Abandoned the Day of Infamy project, however now that I have been extended in Afghanistan until Dec and most likely will be here until Feb I have put it on hold...I got the itch to do some downloading of DirectX and start a whole new overhead game, just cause it would be fun, however with the new job I have, training the Afghan National Army, I am fairly busy. I will be ordering my new books and sending them to myself here and studying them while I'm here.
Cheers!

Wilson are you allowed to share the resources you have been given under the green light project?
If so could you PM me?
I've often thought of making a HL mod mod mod. So to speak. Using the HL engine bare bones and build in HLguard and use Amxmod to provide plugins to the mod to define everything from skins, view models, weapons, spawn locations, teams, map entities and objectives. Allowing everthing in effect to be changed to emulate almost any HL mod, including DoD. Ah! pipedreams.
Thanks

sparky99, what we wound up getting were sounds and a few .max files for models. Nothing substantial. Plus...they're for the Torque engine not HL..

Howdy. I wanted to get back into this debate. Please check the link above for Saurbraten that has been recently updated. Download this game play it for 15mins. Now look at those graphics, think about the guns, rocket lancher and grenages, the capture points and the capture the flag mode. Imagine just changing the models, sounds, sprites and textures. All the tools to do this are free, all the source code is there. Yes the physics are not real world realistic, yes there's no prone or crouch in the code, footsteps and texture sounds but the basics are all there and open for change. It plays on Windows, Mac and Linux. The code is easy to compile and readable. Mapping is dead easy.
Worth thinking about?
