assuming that you have cs installed on your machine, download GCFScape fromrnhttp://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=25 you can then use it to extract everything from your C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscounter-strike.gcf file.rnThe textures are inside the wad files :)rnrnYou can view or extract these using Wally from http://www.telefragged.com/wally/downloads.shtmlrnrnI hope this helps

Out of curiosity how are you converting the maps ? and are they being converted to dod ?rnI'm asking because I don't understand why you need the textures just to convert.rnrnI'd probably just edit to remove cs stuff and add things like info_player_allies etc.

i am converting bsp to map file and editing like changing as u said spawn areas and adding in flags and im also going to add or take out other things on different maps that could use a little tweaking. so yes these are bein converted for dod and from more than cs but i just was havin probs with maps that used original cs textures cuz then i wouldent hav loaded the wad files since the map maker used "stock" wads and now i need to know which map used which wad to edit/convert.

have you tried recompiling back to .bsp??? its not gonna work lol.. there will be way too many errors because decompiling to a bsp file messes up all the brushworknnand the wads used should be listed in the entity list

rnrnDecompiling Origional valve maps to make changes, then recompiling them is illegal bud, as in frowned on, not Copy writed. rnrnAlso decompiling someone elses work to make changes, then recompiling them aint cool either without permission, it is theft. Better to rebuild your own version.rnrnChanging entities is not illegal, or looking at, converting existing .wads to make your own custom .wads, use bspedit for both and bspviewer to see where the textures are, or you can decompile to look at the map only, but not edit it and recompile.

Just trying to help the kid out, is this not a public form?, don't get your panties in a bunch son. rnrnAlthough you are correct it is not illegal as in breaking the law, like copy write protection, but frowned upon by the Map maker and community, without permission, they feel it is theft of there intellectual property, if distributed to the public.rnrnHe would be looked upon better from the map making community, if he remade the map himself, or asked the origional author for permission is what I am trying to say, it was late when I posted and I need sleep, lol so give me a break, edited posts, happy?. rnrnYes I am working on my own maps, and know how much work goes into them. Would you like it if someone broke into your server and took your personal plugins, edit them, and redistribute them as there own?rnrnMost map makers would be happy to share if they were at least asked, and they were mentioned for the credit for the map, just like the plugin makers here would, if there source was used. rnrnhttp://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Decompiling_Maps

rnrnrnI'm sorry but wtf is the difference between changing the entities in someone elses map or decompiling and changing the textures ? Thats like saying you can scratch it but don't dent it. rnrnTo change an entity you are still changing part of the bsp, also wad files are created to be used as is not edited. So who decides that it's OK to change the entities but not the textures etc ?

Entities are public domain, to do what people want with, along with models non custom.wads and anything else that is not created by a map author, in other words the map maker didn't create the entities, he used them from the existing game editor. rnrnGoing into a map and changing his "built structures" "or custom wad that's embedded in the map compile" by decompiling, is what isn't cool, in other words, yeah you can do whatever you want, but you are highly disrespecting the author, if you decompile, recompile, to make structural changes to his work, without permission. rnrnRead the second page of the wiki, http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Talk:Decompiling_Maps ,this has some map makers talking about this, but from source, are they happy? you guys didn't read my posts fully.rnrnExample: Somebody here makes a plugin, the source entities, texts, etc. to make that plugin is open to the public to create anything, anyone can do what they want with them. I take his plugin instead of making my own, make one word change in it, as in rebuild a wall and house, not entities (entities and .wads don't need a decompile recompile to change, unless embedded custom textures), and post it here as my own to distribute, how long do you think I would last on these boards as a plugin creator?rnrnHowever if I use his as an example to look at, and rebuild it enough where it is unique from his, as in rebuild his map from scratch, to where it is different and no longer looks like his, I could then post that here without getting beaten up from the origional author and community?rnrnNow if I used the one word changed .sma, aka rebuilt a wall, and asked the authors permission to use his .map file to do this, to post it here with credit to him as the origional creator, and he granted that, it would be all good, understand?.

I read your post and I understand what you are saying, however your argument in invalid. A texture from a standard wad is no different than that of standard entity. However I am allowed to change the entity but should not mess with the wad.rnrnI do not say that your point is invalid just that you should not differentiate between changing an entity in a map or changing a texture, structure etc.rne.g flag in a map should not be moved as that is where the map builder wanted it in the same way that he wanted a certain texture.rnAll I say is if it's a map of mine and you change it please give credit to the author of the original bit.

SoCal, please stop making posts to try and provoke flame wars. Go up and read your reply and then ask yourself where this little bicker fight came from. Yes, this is a public forum, where the public can post and create productive conversation. Just stop bickering about this and answer the request in the thread, ya know?
