PsychoStats 3

From the first post

Most of you probably already know, PsychoStats 3 has been released. I just wanted to say how impressed I am with it. What is also fun is that Stormtrooper has been putting some effort into getting it working nicely with DOD 1.3. So far the only thing I haven't been able to get working that I would like to get working has been the bonuses for team wins, but we've been working at it.
n
nYou can see what I've done with it here. I put alot of effort into coordinating it with my PostNuke theme. I've still got some work to do on the graphics for the weapons, and I'm having a hard time getting them looking the way I'd like to, but I think even now they are quite a bit better than the defaults, in general.
n
nedit: If you check the link and there are no stats, it could just be that I am working on it and have reset the stats. If you check back in maybe ten minutes they should have been regenerated.
n
nedit again: Joke's on me. I seem to have seriously crashed my server box. I think I'm going to have to hook up a monitor and see if I can figure out what is going on... Could be down for a day or two.

Ya, I tried something weird with PS3 and I think it locked up MySQL. Which of course locked up the website, and then I shut it down and tried to restart it, but I think it went into the Linux equivalent of safe mode and the only way I'm going to get it out of it is to hook up a monitor and keyboard, which will be a pain in the arse... As I said, I'll do it tomorrow, too tired right now... *yawns*

Well, after a hellish couple of days, which included a finicky hard drive on my computer, and having to restore my website database, I've finally got it up and running, and, I think, looking good. I've got a negative bonus for team kills, and bonuses for team wins, but I'm not altogether happy with the way the bonuses are calculated, but Stormtrooper might be doing something about that. Anyway, you can check it out now using the link at the top of the thread. I think this is hands down the best version yet.

Well, things are going much better now than they were. I found out why the server crashed in the first place. I hadn't changed the maximum log size for MySQL from the default, and it was way too high for my server box. MySQL filled up my logs partition, and crashed...nnI guess this is one of those situations where it is a good thing I did some reading and payed attention to advice and put /var/log on its own partition... Anyway, the one thing I haven't done though is implement quotas, and that is probably something I should do, although I don't think I will have the same problem again because I've reconfigured MySQL so that the maximum log file size is much smaller.nnAnyway, the point of this post is that if you are worried about PsychoStats 3 crashing MySQL, in this case it wasn't really PsychoStats' fault. The real problem was that I didn't have MySQL configured properly.

Well Drek, I commend you for your continued patience... I have given up.. after 2 different webhosts, and then trying to run it all on my HOME server... I get nothing but errors or issues trying to set up and propogate the database... I am far from a n00b, but I will also admit to having little to no experience with mySQL, or any other database for that matter... and you Drek, you obviously know what you are talking about as well.. and to know that you are having problems as well tells me that PS3 is not quite ready for public release yet... Obviously the guy who created it knows it in and out and can make his copy work... but the requirements for the whole setup, and the amount of unnecessary user intervention to get things to work means the whole thing is a long ways off from being useable...n nWhile I will say the "instal" being web based and as smooth as it is was a big plus this time around... but after that it all goes downhill.... and after all this time... there has to be a better method of collecting stats and filling the database then having to get in the back door and running a perl script... on the home system this problem is non-existant, nor with the use of SSH, but the majority of webhosts I have seen rarely offer that without a cost... n nmy opinion... stick with pstats 2 for those who have it and it works... there is little need to upgrade at this point...

nnheheh and if you are going to try ps3.. i'd suggest keeping your ps2 stats as is untill you are satisfied with ps3 and have it working properly..nnthis way, unlike some of us, you wont end up re-installing ps2 :-p

Well, there is no question, PS3 is still very beta. The funniest bug I have found so far is the one where unless you look at the stats the first time they are being generated, while they are being generate, no players will rank. So yes you are correct, it is a long way from being ready for a full release.nnBut for me, PS2 never worked properly at all. It was basically completely useless, and PS3 is already working far better than it ever did. This is the first time since PS1 pre-Steam that I have actually felt like putting any effort into getting them working and looking good, because the stats actually work.nnWhat has also been so completely cool is that Storm has been working with me to get things working. Basically due to our conversations he got team wins working for two different mods, and for me, that stat is probably the single most important stat there is. The bonuses still aren't quite working as I would like them to, but that is another story.nn

and after all this time... there has to be a better method of collecting stats and filling the database then having to get in the back door and running a perl script... on the home system this problem is non-existant, nor with the use of SSH, but the majority of webhosts I have seen rarely offer that without a cost...
nWellll, this is one of the things that is so cool about PS3. You can have the stats pages hosted on one machine, the game server on another, and generate the stats on a third machine if you wish. So if your host won't let you run a script, that is no problem, as long as you have PHP and access to MySQL, you are laughing. You put the stats on a schedule and generate them in your bedroom if you like, and I don't think he could do what he wants to do with the stats with anything but Perl. They don't call it the "Perrenially Ecclectic Rubbish Lister" for nothing... ;)nnThe only thing that is intimidating about PS3 is that there are a ton of options for just about everything, so there is alot of configuring if you are a control freak like I am, the first time you set up. But that is also a good thing because PS3 is easily the most customizable of all the PsychoStats that have been released yet. However I should say, if you are going to get some of the cool stats working, like a bonus for team wins, then you will need to access SVN and get the latest snapshot, but Tortoise SVN is super easy to use, once you've figured it out.nnAnother thing that is so cool about PS3 is the ability to export and import all the settings. So basically you can back up your configuration and restore it without too much trouble.

That bug with the players not being ranked is pretty much a show stopper, so for right now I would hold off on switching to PS3.

With some help I figured out that if you leave min_skill at the default the players will rank properly.

rnrnDid that fix it? If so, is it pretty easy to add PS3 to a server and website?

Are you installing PS3? I'm pretty sure there is a install function on it now... But at the other hand I don't use PS3 but read about it... And I'm pretty sure it said something about a install function(Might be wrong:P)

Well the website part is working fine, I just can't get the server stuff to work. I put in the lib folder, the conf.pl stats.pl and stats.cfg in there, but when it says to run stats.pl I don't know how to do that. Any idea anyone?

most common way to automate it is thru a cronjob (or set up an automated task if you run your own webserver)

It would be in your cpanel of your website if you bought one...rnrn/usr/bin/perl /home/whateverishere/psychostats/stats.pl would be the thing to write in it(Assuming that PS still does it this way) And then just leave it to update ever 4 hours or whatever(4 hours is probably what everyone uses)

You know, I seemed to have missed this thread completely. rnrnI have had ps3 up and running since day 1 with no problems whatsoever. I love the new stats and hated the old immensely. Couldnt imagine wanting to stay with ps2 for any reason at all. rnrnAnyways that is my experience with ps3. Just thought I would share.

Sorry, for some reason I'm not getting notification consistently for this thread. Anyway, the problem I was having was because I had several years worth of logs in one folder. I guess this is something that PsychoStats has never been able to handle, and now I have that sorted it works really well. I never had PS2 working properly for the same reason.nnAs for themes, there are a few available now. The one I submitted is intended to be used with the PostNuke pt20X theme. It is just the default theme with different colours, graphics optimized, and the header removed. It can be used on its own, but like I said, no header. I also submitted a weapons images pack for DOD 1.3, but it would be nice to see someone submit a really nice weapons pack. Mine has some nice images, but alot of it is pretty amateur (my work)...

I made a program in visual basic to simply check time left in PsychoStats 3, then if the time left on my server is 59 minutes, it will update the stats (My server is on a 60 minute cycle), so every 60 minutes it updates perfectly to the time the round ended. I did it a bone headed way, I didn't make it specifically check the servers info because I don't know how, I made it go to the query.php with my servers ip on it and strip everything out but the time left and have it checking on a timer every 1 minute.nnIf anyone is interested in the code, let me know and I'll zip and post it.nnSide note: http://stats.red-legion.com - I have it up and running perfectly, I've had no problems with it and actually enjoy it very much.nnCya

Theres really nothing fancy about this program, and it is poorly coded because I did it quickly, so don't be tooooo harsh on me.. lolnnYou'll have to edit small pieces of the code to define your personal url to your psychostats query, your servers ip, etc.. I'm sure you can manage, if anyone thinks this is worth expanding on, let me know and I will make it more flexable.nnCya
